***Sight word flash cards are in an envelope in a sleeve of your child’s folder.  You may leave the envelope in your child’s folder or keep it at home.  If you choose to keep it at home we will put new cards in the sleeve of the folder as we add them. Please be sure to add them to the envelope.  New words will be added every other week.    
This week we will be learning the letter Hh as in hat, hippo, and horse.As part of our study with the letter Hh we will have a “Hat Day” on Friday, September 30th. **Students are asked to wear a favorite hat, a funny hat, or even a homemade hat. (You can be creative with this if you want! Students will be able to wear the hat all day—we do just ask that students do not share hats.) Show and Tell will be with items that begin with the /h/ sound. Check your schedule and start hunting!
~ Our Reading story this week will be Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten. Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday.Review the high frequency words: I, am, the, to, of and little and practice letter recognition for the letters Aa-Zz. We will be talking about People in Communities and will be learning how to classify and categorize.
~In Math we will be counting to 10 with one-to-one correspondence, work with pattern blocks to create and cover designs, and sort objects by color. Students should continue to practice writing numbers 0-9 and sing the number writing verse for each number. We will explore the shapes; circle and rectangle, will identify and order numbers 1-5, identify a missing number and identify most and fewest on a graph. Please review the lessons sent home daily!!!
~Our theme for this week will be APPLES. Students are asked to bring in an apple by Friday. The apple can be any size, color, or kind. Each day of the week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting! We will begin our study of apples by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Monday, Sept. 26th. Many apple activities have been planned. It should be a sweet week!
~ We have been practicing writing our first names. Please watch your child as he/she is writing. Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming letters. Capital letters should only be used at the beginning of names!
ATTENTION: There will be a Fall Festival Planning meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 28th @ 6:00 pm at the Mine Shaft restaurant in Ashland. All who would like to help with the preparations and planning are invited and encouraged to attend.The Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, Oct. 20th. **Each student is asked to bring in $3.00 to help pay for the supplies needed for the festival. Please send money in an envelope with your child’s name, teacher, and FALL FESTIVAL labeled on it.
~The PTO store will be open for Kindergarten on a Monday from 8:30-8:45.Students are asked to shop ONLY at this time. Please do not put school store money in your child’s folder. (Teachers will not see it until after the store closes.)Students should keep it separate in book bags where they can reach it easily for shopping before homeroom.
~ Our school has its own TV news report on Thursdays. Take some time and check it out!! You can view each broadcast from the North Schuylkill Website.(www. Northschuylkill.net) Once you are at the website, scroll down to ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, click on NSE TV, and then click on the NSE TV icon on the screen. Students are the reporters and students throughout the school can be recognized during broadcasts.
~ Tuesday, Sept. 27th the students will have hearing screenings in the library.Please try to have your child present at school and remind them to be QUIET during testing!

Friday- PEP RALLY!!  Don't forget to show your school spirit and wear RED  and BLUE!!

Children are doing a fabulous job with Show and Tell.  This week we are learning the letter Gg as in goat, golf, and good.
In reading, we will begin the story, "Plaidypus Lost". Please review your "Family Time' when it come home for more details.
Anyone interested in helping with the Kindergarten Fall Festival is invited to a meeting in the NSE cafeteria at 2:00 on Wednesday, Sept. 21.  The Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 20 (no rain date).  The meeting MAY run until the end of the school day.  Please send me a note if you would like to help, but are unable to attend the meeting.
Some students are having a very difficult time cutting.  Please save coupons from the newspaper and have students practice cutting on the dotted line.
It is beginning to get cooler, please have your child practice zippering and buttoning their jackets.
School store is open.  Kindergarten students shop on Monday morning before they come to homeroom.  School store is optional, but students may shop any Monday morning for the entire school year.

Friday is the Kindergarten Luau!! Wear your tropical colors!

This week we will learn about the letter "Oo".  The letter "Oo" makes two sounds--short o as in octopus and long o as in overalls.
In math, we will be learning about patterns, shapes, graphs, positional words, and counting.  Kindergarteners should be able to count to 100 by the end of the year so please practice this skill at home.
We will be meeting our 4th grade reading buddies from Mrs. Nestor's class.  Reading Buddies will read to our class every Thursday.
Please be sure to encourage  your child to write their name the proper way.  Students should NOT write their name in all capitals.  We understand that some students need practice writing it the correct way,  but the first step in helping is making sure we are consistent at home and at school.
Our School Book Fair is being held this week.  Students will be able to buy books on Wednesday, September14.  If you would like your child to purchase books at the Book Fair, please send in money in an envelope with your child's name, my name, amount of money, and Book Fair on it.

Show and Tell-- Letter Ll.  Please have your child find something small at home that begins with L.  Place in paper bag and send to school for Thursday.  All items will be returned on Thursday.

Reminder: Thursday is our Luau! Kindergarten Students are asked to dress tropical: bright colors, floral prints, Hawaiian shirts, etc.  Students do not have to follow the school dress code on Thursday. 


Please return any papers from the nurse, emergency phone numbers, and internet permission forms as soon as possible. 


If your child is scheduled to bring in a snack, we have 23 students participating.  Please remember to send in spoons, napkins, etc. for puddings, apple sauces, etc.
We started math this week and our students really enjoy it!  Their favorite part of the lesson is learning the song that we sing to practice the correct way to write numbers.  Ask your child to sing the song for you!



This week we began learning the letter Ll as in lion, lemonade, and lizard.  Please review the letter and sound with your child at home.  On Thursday, September 8th, Kindergarten will have a Luau!  Students are asked to dress tropical: bright colors, floral prints, Hawaiian shirts, etc.  Please remember this is only for Kindergarten students.
In Reading, we read the book “The Little School Bus” and discussed characters.  We also learned 6 amazing words: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth


Try to make sure your child has his/her bus tag every day.  The end of the day is hectic and some children don’t know their bus numbers yet!

Every Friday of the school year is a spirit day!  This is completely optional!  It is done to promote school spirit and enthusiasm for our sports teams.  The children are allowed to wear any North Schuylkill t-shirt and uniform pants or uniform shorts (please see p. 5 of the student dress code.)  The children may dress in regular uniform clothing if you wish.
School pictures will be taken on Friday, September 9th.  Please be sure to return your child’s envelope as soon as possible!
We had a fabulous first week of Kindergarten and are thrilled to have your child in our class!  We hope that he/she enjoyed their first week as much as we did and are looking forward to returning to school on Tuesday!!!!
