In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant Vv and its sound as in vowel, violin, and valentine. Word List 13 will be tested however the list will not be sent home prior to the test. At this point in Kindergarten students should be able to read the words without practice. There will be no Show and Tell for the letter Vv.

In Reading, we’ll continue with Unit 4 and read “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” This version of the classic tale remains true to the original. Goldilocks arrives at the bears' house, eats their porridge, sits in their chairs, and falls asleep in baby bear's bed! We will be discussing adventures. Students will learn about characters. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home next week.

In Math we’ll be counting nickels up to $.50. Students will identify and order numbers and also comparing sets.
Congratulations to all of the students who completed and presented their Dinosaur reports. Everyone did a dino-mite job!


We are trying to get students outside for recess as much as possible! Please be sure that your child has a warm jacket, gloves, and hat!

On Friday, March 1st, NSE will celebrate “Read Across America.” We will have students from Bloomsburg University visit our classroom to teach a lesson using the Dr. Seuss book, "Yertle the Turtle".  We will be doing lots of Dr. Seuss activities all week and we’ll even have a few surprise guest readers!

In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant Dd and its sound as in dog, dentist, and dinosaur. Word List 12 will be tested next week however the list will not be sent home prior to the test. At this point in Kindergarten students should be able to read the words without practice. There will be no Show and Tell for the letter Dd but instead we’ll share Dinosaur reports! Please check your child’s folder for more information about the reports.

In Reading, we’ll continue with Unit 4 and read “One Little Mouse.” When one little mouse goes in search of a new place to sleep, what does he find? Two moles, three frogs, four quail, and a forest full of animals willing to open their hearts and homes to him. But like most travelers, this little mouse finds there is no place like home! We will be discussing animal adventures. Students will learn about consonant blends and sequence. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home next week.

In Math we’ll be counting nickels up to $.25. Students will learn about a new shape, cylinder. Finally we’ll practice ABC patterns.

There will be no school for students on Friday, February 15, and Monday, February 18.

At this point in Kindergarten students should be able to read the words without practice. There will be no Show and Tell for the letter Yy.

In Reading, we’ll continue with Unit 4 and read “My Lucky Day.” When a delicious-looking piglet knocks on Mr. Fox's door "accidentally," the fox can hardly believe his good luck. It's not every day that dinner just shows up on your doorstep! It must be his lucky day! Or is it? Before Mr. Fox can say grace, the piglet has manipulated him into giving him a fabulously tasty meal, a bath, a massage, and . . . freedom. We will be discussing surprises. Students will learn about cause and effect. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home next week.

In Math we’ll learn a new pattern, ABC. We’ll act out “some, some more” and “some, some went away” stories. Students will also solve problems by “guessing and checking.”

Students will participate in “Jump Rope for Hearts” on Wednesday, February 13th. This will NOT count as a day in our specials rotation but students are encouraged to dress in gym clothes (especially sneakers!)

February 11th-14th is Anti Bullying week. Students are encouraged to participate in the following theme days:

Feb. 11th, Monday: Don’t Knock it, Sock it!—wear crazy socks 
Feb. 12th, Tuesday: Hats off for no bullying—wear crazy hats or crazy hair
Feb. 13th, Wednesday: Show that you’re a Spartan –-wear NSE shirts
Feb. 14th, Thursday: Show your heart-- wear Red 

Valentine’s Day parties will be held on Thursday, February 14th. Please do not send in valentines before February 11th.

Phonics list 10 test

 In Phonics we will be learning about the vowel Ee and its short sound as in elephant, escalator, and empty. Word List 10 is in today's folder and will be tested Friday, February 8th. This is the LAST Word List that will be sent home with MOST students. At this point in Kindergarten students should be able to read the words without practice. There will be no Show and Tell for the letter Ee.

In Reading, we’ll start Unit 4 and read “Bunny Day.” In this story we’ll spend the day with a lovable bunny family from eight o'clock in the morning, when Father Rabbit wakes up his little bunnies, to eight o'clock at night, when Mother Rabbit tucks them into bed. We will be discussing adventures. Students will learn about sequence. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home next week.

In Math we’ll be working on length. We’ll compare lengths and use words like shorter, and longer. We’ll also put objects in order according to their length. Finally, we’ll measure length using nonstandard units. We’ll also practice using a matrix and geoboards.
