On Friday, February 28th, NSE will celebrate “Read Across America.” We will have students from Bloomsburg University visit our classroom to teach a lesson using the Dr. Seuss book, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut".  We will be doing lots of Dr. Seuss activities all week and we’ll even have a few surprise guest readers!

In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant Dd and its sound as in dog, dentist, and dinosaur. Word List 12 will be tested next week however the list will not be sent home prior to the test. At this point in Kindergarten students should be able to read the words without practice. There will be no Show and Tell for the letter Dd but instead we’ll share Dinosaur reports! Please check your child’s folder for more information about the reports.

In Reading, we’ll continue with Unit 4 and read “My Lucky Day.” When a delicious-looking piglet knocks on Mr. Fox's door "accidentally," the fox can hardly believe his good luck. It's not every day that dinner just shows up on your doorstep! It must be his lucky day! Or is it? Before Mr. Fox can say grace, the piglet has manipulated him into giving him a fabulously tasty meal, a bath, a massage, and . . . freedom. We will be discussing surprises. Students will learn about cause and effect. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home this week.

In Phonics we will be learning about the consonant “Cc” as in cat, cupcake, and Clifford!
The rule for the /k/ sound is: Use Kk when the /k/sound is followed by the letters e, i, or y and use Cc when the /k/ sound is followed but the letters a, o, u or any consonant.

I     In Reading, we’ll read “Hide Clyde.” Clyde is a chameleon that doesn't know how to hide. While his siblings effortlessly match whatever they happen to be sitting on, he stands out like a sore thumb. Luckily for him, his bug-catching skills are great. A bigger-than-usual bug flies off with him, dumping him in a house -- which Clyde makes the best of, finally mastering his hiding skills before getting a ride back to the jungle. We will be discussing changing for protection. Students will learn about main ideas. Please be sure to review your Family Times when it comes home.

In gym, children are working on tumbling skills.  At the end of this unit, children are expected to be able to tie their shoes.  Please start practicing this with them.
