We will be starting our 5th story for Reading, Smash! Crash!  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday.  Our focus will be on the story’s character.  We will be working with the consonant letter Mm and the beginning and final sound /m/ in words.  Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words; I, am, the, to, a, name, out, can, love, and little; practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz.

For Math we will finish up with Topic 16; Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes.  Review the 2 and 3 dimensional shapes circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere.   Continue to review the daily math practice pages as well.

Hearing screens are scheduled for Tuesday, September 30th for grades K-3.  Discuss with your child the importance of being quiet while the testers are working with each student!

Mark your calendar; Picture retakes will be held at NSE on Thursday, October 23rd.  Anyone who may have been absent on Picture Day in September is asked to be photographed on re-take day.  Also anyone NOT happy with photos or had a problem may call PSP to get a correction or your child may return the photos and be photographed again on retake day.

FYI:  The last Fall Festival planning meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 30th @ 6:30pm at the Mineshaft in Ashland.  **The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, October 9th.  Parent and grandparent volunteers who have the necessary clearances are welcome and needed to help with this fun-filled day!  **Anyone who has not yet sent in $4.00 for Fall Festival is asked to do so before 09/30/2014.

This week, we’ll read “Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten.” We will be discussing people in communities. Students will be learning about classifying and categorizing.

We have begun practicing writing our first names.  Please watch your child as he/she is writing.  Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming letters.  Capital letters should only be used at the beginning of names!

FYI:  There will NOT be a Fall Festival planning meeting this week.  However, all interested in helping are invited and encouraged to help out with the Fall Festival event. **The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, October 9th.  Parent, grandparent, and/or other family relatives who have the necessary clearances are welcome and NEEDED to help with this fun-filled day!  This is not a PTO event, so anyone with clearances may help!
**Also anyone, who has not yet turned in his/her $4.00 fall festival money, is asked to do so before Friday, October 3rd.

**Please help your child practice/learn his/her 4-digit computer number. This will help him/her log into the computer quickly and give him/her more time to work when using computers at school.  (We can also stop wearing our name badges to lunch and library once all students know their ID number for the cooks and librarians!) I will be asking the children their 4 digit pin number on Friday.  Your child should know this by now.  This pin is used everyday.  If they know it, they will receive a treat.

~ Our Reading story this week will be Plaidypus Lost.  We will be talking about how families cooperate, we will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home in your child’s folder.

The next Fall Festival meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 17 at 6:30 at the Mineshaft in Ashalnd.
**JUST A REMINDER:  Clearances must be on file in the office to help at the Fall Festival, but anyone can help with the preparations and planning!!!
If your child is absent, please send in an excuse the next day your child returns to school.

With Fall and the cooler weather upon us, please be sure your child has the proper clothing for a ½ hour outside recess.  Kindergarten tries to get out for “fresh air” and time to run around whenever the weather allows.  Temperatures can vary from morning to afternoon and sometimes the shady areas of the playground are chilly.  Better to be prepared with a jacket/sweater/sweatshirt than be underdressed.  Also, please have your child practice zippering and/or buttoning his/her coat and “pulling” the sleeves right-side out before attempting to put it on.  Thank you!!!

School pictures will be taken on Friday, September 12th. Please be sure to return your child’s envelope as soon as possible!  School dress code must be followed.

Please be sure to encourage your child to write their name the proper way. Students should NOT write their name in all capitals. We understand that some students need practice writing it the correct way, but the first step in helping is making sure we are consistent at home and at school.

It is starting to get chilly, please remember to send a jacket with your child.  Practice zipping and buttoning with them.  Also make sure your child's name is written somewhere on the jacket.

Please return the PTO fieldtrip FREE t-shirt form by Friday.  Children wear these shirts for this year's and next year's fieldtrip.

In math we are discussing positions (above, below, on, inside, outside)

We will begin our 2nd Reading story, We Are So Proud. We will work on recognizing the letters Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm. and Nn. Watch for your take home story—Am I?, to come home in your child’s folder.  Continue to read at home, talk about story characters (who the story is about) and setting (where and when the story takes place), and read the high frequency words I and am.

There will be a Kindergarten Fall Festival planning meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 10th @ 2:00 pm in the NSE cafeteria.  Anyone interested in helping with the Kindergarten Fall Festival, which will be held on Thursday, October 9th, is invited to attend the planning meeting.  The meeting may run until the end of the school day.  (Just a reminder:  In order to help at the Fall Festival you must have clearances!!)  **If you would like to help, but are unable to attend this meeting, please send a note to the teacher with your contact information listed, and your name and contact information will be passed along to the other parents who will be helping with the Fall Festival.

Try to make sure your child has his/her bus tag every day. The end of the day is hectic and some children don’t know their bus numbers yet!

Every Friday of the school year is a spirit day! This is completely optional! It is done to promote school spirit and enthusiasm for our sports teams. The children are allowed to wear any North Schuylkill t-shirt and uniform pants or uniform shorts (please see p. 5 of the student dress code.) The children may dress in regular uniform clothing if you wish.

School pictures will be taken on Friday, September 12 th.  Envelopes will be sent home shortly.  School dress code must be followed.

We had a fabulous first week of Kindergarten and are thrilled to have your child in our class! We hope that he/she enjoyed their first week as much as we did!!
