In Reading we will begin to read the story Nature Spy .  We will be looking at what we can learn about nature when we look closely.   We will focus on learning the comprehension skill setting and practice the learned high frequency words.
This week we will be learning the consonant letter Ss as in sun, snake, and Saturday.
For Math we will be continuing with Topic 2, so be sure to review counting sets/objects to 5, comparing sets, and writing and reading numbers 0-5.  Also review the words/concepts more, fewer, and same as
Anyone who has not yet turned in his/her $5 to cover costs for the Halloween/Valentine’s parties, please do so as soon as possible.  Thank you!!
Students and Parents K-12 are invited to attend the October Informational District Parent Meeting on Monday, Oct. 27th 6:00-7:00 pm @ the NSE Library.
Red Ribbon Week campaign is set for October 27-31, 2014.  The theme is “Love Yourself, Be Drug Free!”  --Check out the week’s scheduled events /information sheet in your child’s folder!  (Mon. 10/27—wear crazy socks; Tues. 10/28 –wear orange; Wed. 10/29 –wear your mustaches and NS mustache shirts; Thurs. 10/30 --- crazy hair; Fri. 10/31 – wear NS red)
Students received their FREE, red NS t-shirts from the PTO this week.  Boys and girls can wear them now, but be sure to keep them handy for the class field trip in May!
Vision Screenings will take place this week for KindergartenMrs. Kaminsky's class is scheduled for Thursday, October 30th between 9:00-9:45.  Please try to be present!
Friday, October 31st will be our classroom Halloween parade and party from 1:30-3:00.  Homeroom helpers, who are PTO members and have clearances on file in the office, will be permitted to go to the classroom @ 1:30 but should be at the school a bit earlier to be checked in at the front door (this sometimes takes awhile due to the number of parents entering!)  The parade will begin at 2:00pm with Kindergarten leading the way.  Students will parade in the upper bus loop.  ALL are welcome to come to see the children parade.  Parties will end by 3:00 pm.  Your child should NOT wear his/her costume to school!  Please send the costume to school in a bag with your child’s name on the outside.  Students will get dressed in costumes with the help of teachers and homeroom helpers.  Keep in mind students will be dressing at school, so keep the costumes as simple as possible.  (No spraying hair at school, or a face full of make-up at school) 
Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 10th from 12:00-6:00.  Please be sure to return conference forms ASAP—a schedule will be sent home next week.

This week we will be reviewing letter Aa and its two sounds, short /a/ as in cat and long /a/ as in acorn.
In Reading we will begin the story "Flowers".
For Math we will be finishing up with Topic 1, so review counting sets/objects to 5, comparing sets, writing and reading numbers to 5.   Topic 2 will continue with comparing and ordering 0-5.  We will compare using more, fewer, and same as and learn ordinal numbers through fifth.  
We are currently collecting money for the scheduled classroom parties.   Please send in $5.00 in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom and mark “Party Money” on the outside of the envelope, if you have not already done so. Thank you!!
Diane Rowland, will visit with our class on Wednesday, October 22 for our monthly guidance lesson.  She will be speaking with the children about Drugs and Alcohol in preparation for the annual Red Ribbon Week, which will be held the last week of October.  Take some time to ask your child what he/she learned and/or discussed at school that day!!
NSE picture re-take/make-up day will be held on Thursday, October 23rd.  Please make sure if your child is having picture retakes to send his/her first package of pictures with him/her that day.  Questions regarding picture packages, contact PSP at 1-800-248-6394.

Monday, October 20th will be Day 4-Art, and students will be painting, so please do not send your child to school in NEW clothes.  Mrs. Zink suggests that your send an old shirt to school to be used as a painting smock.  It will be kept in school all year to use in art class.

For Reading we will finish the story "Dig, Dig, Digging". Please review the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, a, have and is.   We will be learning the vowel letter Aa as in apple and acorn.  We will focus on the short vowel sound.   Don’t forget to practice ALL sight word flashcards daily!!!
 
·      In Math we will be counting sets of objects to 5, writing numbers 1-5, comparing sets, and representing numbers to 5.  Take some time to review daily worksheets!!!
 
·      We are currently collecting money for the scheduled classroom parties (Halloween and Valentine).  Please send in $5.00 in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom and mark “Party Money” on the outside of the envelope.  Thank You!

·      Mark your calendar for Picture Re-take Day on Thursday, October 23rd.  Anyone who had been absent on Picture Day in September is asked to be photographed on re-take day.  Also anyone NOT happy with photos from Picture Day may return the complete package of photos and have his/her photo retaken
 
·      Parent/teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 10th.  More information will be sent home.

·      Thank you to the parents/grandparents who helped with the Fall Festival. Your help was greatly appreciated; without YOU we couldn’t have had such a successful and fun day!!!

We will begin the story Dig, Dig, Digging in Reading.  We will be talking about how machines help people.  We will be practicing the sound /t/ and the skill classifying and categorizing.  Continue to review the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, and a when your read together. 
For Math we will begin Topic 1:  One to Five.  Students will learn how to read, write, and count numbers from 1-5.  Be sure to review the daily practice pages that your child brings home in his/her folder!
October 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week so please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family.  Be sure to have a practice fire drill and create an escape plan with a designated meeting place.  The school wide Book Fair will begin in the Library starting Monday, October 6th**Parents will be able to shop with their child on Monday night from 4-7 pm if interested.

Anyone who has not yet turned in FALL FESTIVAL MONEY --$4, is asked to try and send it in as soon as possible.  The parents who are planning the FALL FESTIVAL will need to pay for supplies and goodies. **Our Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 9th.  Any parents and/or grandparents who have clearances on file in the office are invited to help.  Students are allowed to dress in GYM clothes even though we do not have gym on Thursday.  Some of the activities may get a little messy so we recommend that students do not wear new clothes.  Also, we will be spending the majority of the day outside (unless it rains) so dress your child for the weather!  Boys and girls are to follow the dress code (NO JEANS).  Sneakers are recommended.
Friday, October 10th is an ACT 80 ½ day.  Dismissal will be 11:45.  **Please note there will be NO BREAKFAST or SNACK due to the early dismissal.  (Lunch for Kindergarten will be from 9:15-9:45 and art 9:45-10:05).  There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 13th, Columbus Day, due to a scheduled Teacher In-Service day.  School will reopen on Tuesday, October 14th.
