September 26-30
This week we will be starting our story for Reading, "Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten".  We will be talking about people in communities and will be learning how to classify and categorize.  Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words; I, am,the, and little; practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz.

For Math we will be finishing up with Topic 15: Position and Location of Shapes.  Be sure to review daily practice pages and review the positional words/concepts inside, outside, in front of, behind, next to, above, below, on, left, and right.

Our Science theme for the week will be APPLES.  The apple can be any size, color, or kind.  Each day of the week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting!  We will also kick-off the theme by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Monday! It should be a sweet week!!!

With the cooler temperatures, please send in a jacket or sweater for your child to wear at recess.  We do go outside.

Sight Words are assessed once a week.  There are flash cards in your child’s folder that you should be using to review the words nightly.  Most of the class is still on List 1.   When your child moves on to a new list, continue to study the previous words along with the new list.  There will be “review” tests given throughout the year to make sure students know all the words and not just the list that they are working on that week.

The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 6th.  We are asking that each child please donate $3.00 for the Fall Festival. Please send it all donations by Friday, September 30th if you haven’t done so already!  The next Fall Festival meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at 6:30 at the Mineshaft in Ashland.

September “AR” Book Buddy recording sheets will be due on Friday, Sept. 30th. Any student who has read 15 or more books will receive a monthly treat!!

September 19-23
Our next reading story will be Plaidypus Lost.  In this story, we will tag along with a lively young girl and her constant companion, Plaidypus, as they find adventures wherever they go!  We will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence.   Continue to read at home, talk about story characters and setting, and recognize the letters from Aa-Nn, as well as the high frequency words I, am, the and little.

Please continue practicing List 1 of sight words.  When your child correctly reads List 1, they can begin practicing List 2.

In Math we will be testing Topic 14, and we will be starting Topic 15: Position and Location of Shapes. We will continue to identify and describe 2 and 3 dimensional shapes such as; circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cone, sphere, cube, and cylinder.  Please take some time to review the daily practice pages that your child brings home

In science, we are exploring our 5 senses and what we use to observe.  We will soon be talking about Johnny Appleseed and starting our apple unit.  We will graph, sort, count, and describe apples.  We will also be getting ready for fall and discuss fall activities and weather.

The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 6th.    If interested in volunteering, please be sure to complete and return your volunteer form that was sent home Thursday, Sept. 15th.  The next Fall Festival meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27th @ 6:30 at the Mineshaft in Ashland.  All volunteers who will be participating at the Fall Festival MUST have all 4 clearances (Child Abuse, Criminal, FBI Fingerprinting, and Mandated Reporter Training) on file in the office.  The Fall Festival is not a PTO event, so you do not have to be a member of the PTO to help.

Parents and Guardians interested in joining the PTO should sign up and send $3.00 for yearly dues ASAP.  The required clearances must be on file in the office before you are allowed into the school to help as a PTO member.

Due to the changes in temperature inside and outside the school, some students may want to bring a sweater or sweatshirt without a hood to keep in their cubbies in case they feel chilly!  Jackets with hoods should not be worn inside during the school day.

Word list 1 (I, a, and, the to) will be checked during the upcoming week by Friday, 9/16 and if all words are read correctly, then Word List 2 will be tested next.  If more time is needed with list one, then List 1 words will be checked again the following week before List 2.  Continue to practice sight words daily!!

In Math we will finish working with Topic 14: Identifying and Describing Shapes. Boys and girls should correctly name shapes (rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, and hexagons) regardless of their orientation or overall size and identify shapes as 2 dimensional, “flat” or 3 dimensional “solid”.

Boys and girls have been doing a Super Job with their AR “Book Buddy” books and bags. Remember, any books your child and you read together at home can be recorded on the monthly reading log enclosed in your child’s “Book Buddy” bag.  Also, please be sure to complete the log when the book enclosed is read.  Some books are being returned without being recorded.

The PTO school store will open on Monday, September 12th.   Kindergarten students will be able to shop on a MONDAYS from 8:20-8:45.  Students are asked to shop ONLY on this day of the week and at this time.  Please do not put school store money in your child’s folder.  (Teachers will NOT see it until after the store closes.)  Students should keep it separate in backpacks where THEY can reach it easily for shopping BEFORE homeroom.

Parents and Guardians interested in joining the PTO should sign up and pay $3.00 as soon as possible.  There will be a PTO meeting on Monday, Sept. 12th in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30.  All are invited and encouraged to attend.  The required clearances must be on file in the office before you are allowed into the school to help as a PTO member.
