January30-February3
Please practice:

For Reading we will begin Unit 4: Let’s Go Exploring.  The first story is Rooster’s Off to See the World by Eric Carle.  It is an animal fantasy and we will be reviewing the comprehension skill, sequence.  We will work with initial /h/ sound for the letter Hh.  Review high frequency sight words daily!
In Math we will move on to Topic 7: Understanding Addition.                      
Hip, Hip, Hooray! Our 100th day is just several school days away!!!  On Wednesday, February 1st students are asked to dress as if they were 100 years old! (Please note that if school is cancelled, the 100th day will be moved to the next school day.)
Thursday, February 2nd is Groundhog’s Day.  Check to see if Phil sees his shadow and whether there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring!
Kindergarten will have a Luau for the January behavior reward on Friday, February 3rd.  Students will be allowed to wear a tropical printed shirt or dress.  Dress code bottoms are expected. Sandals and flip flops are NOT to be worn!! 
February recording sheets for our AR “Book Buddy” bags will be sent home on Tuesday, 1/31.  The goal for the month is 15+ books.  January Pizza Hut reward coupons will be enclosed in your child’s folder too. 
On Friday, February 10th we will be having our Valentine’s party from 2:00-3:00. Valentines will be “delivered” the day of the party, so be sure to bring them to school before then!

January 23-27
Please practice the following with your child:

 For Reading this week we will read the story, The Lion and the Mouse. We will introduce the comprehension skill, main idea.  We will review the short /o/ sound in words and continue to work with the high frequency words; they, of, and you.   
 Just a reminder:  January AR “Book Buddy” recording sheets will be due on Tuesday, January 31st.  The goal for the month is 15 books.  Any student who reads and records 15 or more books will receive a Pizza Hut reward coupon.  Happy Reading!!
In math, we will begin Topic 6: Numbers to 100.  Review counting, reading, and writing numbers 0-20 and ordering numbers forward and backward.  Also practice counting by 1s and 10s to 100.    

February 1 is tentatively the 100th Day of school.  Children will be allowed to dress as if they were 100 years old.  Also, a 100 piece project will be due on February 1.

January’s behavior reward will be a LUAU on Friday, February 3rd. Students will be permitted to wear a brightly colored/tropical printed/Hawaiian shirt or dress.  No shorts or sandals will be allowed!  Dress code will apply for bottoms!  A lei will be provided!!  Boys and girls will rotate through 3 rooms for a snack, music & limbo, and an art activity. 
The Valentine’s Day party will be held on Friday, February 10th from 2:00-3:00.   A Valentine’s Class List will be sent home to help you prepare valentines for the party.  (PARENT HELPERS WILL BE CONTACTED SOON WITH DETAILS)

For Reading we will continue with Unit 3 and the story Then and Now.  It is a nonfiction book and we will talk about the comprehension strategy “draw conclusions”.  We will also work with the initial and medial short /o/ sound and the letter Oo.

In math, we will begin Topic 6: Numbers to 100.  Review counting, reading, and writing numbers 0-20 and ordering numbers forward and backward.  Also practice counting by 1s and 10s to 100.    

February 1 is tentatively the 100th Day of school.  Children will be allowed to dress as if they were 100 years old.  Also, a 100 piece project will be due on February 1.

Friday, January 20, is a $1.00 Dress Down Day.

Monday, January 9, 2017

January 9-13
For Reading we will be starting the next story Farfallina and Marcel.  In this book, we will talk about the comprehension strategy “plot” and how friendships are formed and can change.  We will also be learning the consonant letter Ff and Kk.

King Day will be on Thursday of this week.  Ask the boys if they enjoyed being king for a day.

In Math, we will be finishing Topic 5; Numbers to 20.  Practice counting, reading, and writing numbers to 20 and take some time to review daily practice pages! Review 2D and 3D shapes and practice counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s.
There will be a Data Delay on Wednesday, January 11.
There will be no school for students on Monday, January 16 for Martin Luther King Day.
Dinosaurs reports will be presented to the class on Friday, January 13.  Your child will need to present the information in front of the class.   
Weather permitting, the 100th Day of School is on January 31.  More information on this exciting day will be coming home.

January 3-6
For Reading we will continue with Unit 3; Watch Me Change.  We will move on to the story, George Washington Visits.  It is a historical fiction story, and we will be discussing how life today is different from life 100s of years ago.  For phonics we will be working with the letters Dd and Kk and their sounds /d/ and /k/.

Dinosaur reports will go home on Tuesday, January 3.  They are due on Friday, January 13.

In math, we will be working with Numbers to 20 for Topic 5.  Take some time to practice comparing sets (greater and fewer) and ordering numbers using a number line.

Accelerated Reader Lists are due Tuesday, January 3.  A new January list will go home Tuesday, January 3.
