March 19-23
Practice the following:
-sight words-writing numbers 0-20- counting to 100- letters and sounds


For Reading we will begin Unit 5: Going Places.  Our first story will be Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells.  It is an animal fantasy story and we will be discussing realism and fantasy.  

For Math, we will continue with Topic 8; Understanding Subtraction.  Students will act out and solve subtraction word problems, will use the minus sign to represent take away situations when recording subtraction, will use the equal sign, subtract, and write the difference.  Review practice pages as they come home in the folder. 

The PTO Spring Fling Chinese Auction will be held on April 14th and 15th.  Our class’ theme basket will be “Ice Cream Sundae”. Donations are due to the teacher by Friday, April 3rd.  If a family would rather not shop for a donation, monetary donations will be accepted and Mrs. Kaminsky will shop for items for the basket.  There is no value set and you can be creative!! If your child brings in an item for the basket, they will receive a coupon for a free dress down day. Thank you in advance for your support!

In Reading we will read the story, Abuela, by author Arthur Dorros.  It will be the last of our “adventure” stories for Unit 4.  It will be a fiction story about a city adventure and the boys and girls will learn a few Spanish words.

In Math we will be continuing with Understanding Addition, Topic 7.  Review daily practice pages and continue to practice joining sets and counting how many altogether. 

Kindergarten registration for the upcoming, 2018-2019 school year will be held the week of March 12- 16.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this information to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office.

In Reading we will begin an informational text titled If You Could Go to Antarctica, by author Fay Robinson.  We will practice the comprehension skill, classify and categorize.
In Math we will be continuing with Understanding Addition, Topic 7.  Review daily practice pages and continue to practice joining sets and counting how many altogether. 
Spring Pictures will be taken at NSE on Friday, March 9th.  ALL Children will be photographed and pictures will be available for purchase in 7-10 days.  PSP provides the school with a donation for every portrait package.  For best results do not wear green!!!  Students may dress up!
Report cards will be sent home on Monday, March 12.

Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be starting on Monday, March 5th and continue through Friday, March 9th.  Check for Mrs. Kaminsky's ad in the CLASSIFIED section of the newspaper.  Ads can be sent to school during the week for treats.  The I’m a Reader forms, for those who participate, should be returned to the teacher by the following Monday (March 12) with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.

For Reading we will the classic traditional tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears as retold by Valeri Gorbachev.


In math, we will finish Topic 6: Numbers to 100.  Review counting, reading, and writing numbers 0-20 and ordering numbers forward and backward.  Also practice counting by 1s and 10s to 10.

February recording sheets for our AR “Book Buddy” are due  on Wednesday, 2/28.  The goal for the month is 15+ books.  February Pizza Hut reward coupons will be enclosed in your child’s folder too. 

There are no more Data Delays in this school year.

Friday, March 2nd is NSE’s Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  Throughout the upcoming weeks we will be reading some great books by Dr. Seuss and making some fun things to go along with the stories.  Some students from Bloomsburg University will visit our classroom on Friday, 3/2 to read and to do a follow up activity with the students.

Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be starting on Monday, March 5th and continue through Friday, March 9th.  Information with details will be sent home in the upcoming weeks.

The 5th annual NSE Chinese auction will be held at NSE this year on Saturday, April 14th and Sunday, April 15th.  You may “Shop and Drop” on Saturday and on Sunday.  The auction will start promptly at 3:00 on Sunday.  Donations of prizes are greatly appreciated!! For Reading our next story will be “One Little Mouse!” by Dori Chaconas.  It will be a rhyming/concept story and we will review the comprehension skill, sequence.  We will introduce consonant blends too. 

In math, we will begin Topic 6: Numbers to 100.  Review counting, reading, and writing numbers 0-20 and ordering numbers forward and backward.  Also practice counting by 1s and 10s to 100. 

School is in session on Monday, February 19.

For Reading we will read the story, My Lucky Day, by Keiko Kasza.  It is an animal fantasy (fiction) story and we will focus on the comprehension skill cause and effect.

In Math, we will begin Topic 5; Numbers to 20.  Continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s and writing numbers to 20.  Take some time to review daily practice pages! 

Book orders are due February 19.

There is no data delay on Wednesday, February 14.

Friday, February 16 is a Spartan Dress Down for $1.

For Reading we will begin Unit 4: Let’s Go Exploring.  The first story is Rooster’s Off to See the World by Eric Carle.  It is an animal fantasy and we will be reviewing the comprehension skill, sequence.

In math, we will be working with Numbers to 20 for Topic 5.  Take some time to practice comparing sets (greater and fewer) and ordering numbers using a number line.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! Our 100th day is just several school days away!!!  O Thursday, February 1st students are asked to dress as if they were 100 years old!  Also, please bring in their 100 Day project. (Please note that if school is cancelled, the 100th day will be moved to the next school day.)

Friday, February 2nd is Groundhog’s Day.  Check to see if Phil sees his shadow and whether there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring!
