October 31- November 4
Please continue to practice:
--sight words
--orally counting from 1-100
--writing numbers from 0-20

In Reading we will read the book Animal Babies in Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield. We will be talking about grassland animals, review the letter Pp and the /p/ sound, and practice the comprehension skill main idea.  The words we, my, and like will be introduced as new high frequency words. 

For Math we will continue to work with Topic 2:  Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0-5.  Take some time to practice number writing and counting sets, and be sure to review daily practice pages.  Also review the words/concepts more, fewer, and same as. 

AR/Book Buddy recording sheets for October are due on Tuesday, November 1.  Any student who reaches or exceeds the goal of 15 or more books will receive a PIZZA HUT BOOK IT coupon! 

Be sure your child has a jacket, mittens or gloves, and a hat for recess. We try to get outside whenever possible—if dressed properly, the fresh air does us good!!!  Also, have your child practice putting on, taking off (pulling sleeves back out), and zipping/buttoning his/her coat.

October 24-28
As we begin to finish our second month of school, you and your child should be practicing the following things daily:
--sight words 
--orally counting from 1-100
--writing numbers from 0-20

In Reading we will begin to read the story Nature Spy.  We will be looking at what we can learn about nature when we look closely.   We will focus on learning the comprehension skill setting.
This week we will be reviewing letter Aa and its two sounds, short /a/ as in cat and long /a/ as in acorn, and learning the consonant letter Ss as in sun, snake, and Saturday.  

For Math we have finished up with Topic 1, so be sure to review counting sets/objects to 5, comparing sets, writing and reading numbers to 5.   Topic 2 will continue with comparing and ordering 0-5.  We will compare using more, fewer, and same as and learn ordinal numbers through fifth.  

School Photo Make Up/Re-take Day will be Tuesday, October 25th @ NSE.  Please make sure if your child is having picture retakes to send his/her first package of pictures with him/her that day.  Questions regarding picture packages, contact PSP at 1-800-248-6394.

Friday, October 28th will be the school-wide Halloween parade/party. The parade will begin at 2:00 pm with the Kindergarten students and end with 6th grade.  Students will parade in front of the HOME side bleachers at the HS stadium, weather permitting.  ALL are welcome to come to see the children parade. Your child should NOT wear his/her costume to school!  Please send the costume to school in a bag with your child’s name on the outside.  Students will get dressed in costumes in the classroom.  Keep in mind students will be dressing at school, so keep the costumes as simple as possible.  Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade at the HS Stadium!! Be sure to be there early as Kindergarten will be first!!

October 17-21
    For Reading we will begin Unit 2; Look at Us.  The first story is Flowers.  Please review recognizing capital and lowercase letters from Aa to Zz and the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, a, have and is.   We will be learning the vowel letter Aa as in apple and acorn.  We will focus on the short vowel sound.  Don’t forget to practice ALL sight word flashcards daily!

·    In Math we will be working with Topic 1:  One to Five.  Students will be counting sets of objects to 5, writing numbers 1-5, comparing sets, and representing numbers to 5.  Take some time to review daily worksheets.

Book Fair is this week.  Parents can shop tonight from 4-7.  Our class shops on Wednesday afternoon.

Keep practicing putting on coats and zipping and buttoning.

    The School-wide Halloween Parade will be held on Friday, October 28th @ 2:00 pm.  Weather permitting the students will be walking to the HS Stadium.

October 11-14
We will begin the story Dig, Dig, Digging in Reading.  We will be talking about how machines help people.  We will be practicing the sound /t/ for the letter Tt and the skill classifying and categorizing.  Continue to review the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, and a when you read together. 

For Math we will finish Topic 16 and begin Topic 1:  One to Five.  Students will learn how to read, write, and count numbers from 1-5.  Be sure to review the daily practice pages!

Oct. 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week
 so please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family.  Be sure to have a practice fire drill and create an escape plan with a designated meeting place.

Wednesday, October 12th will be our monthly 2 Hour Data Delay Day. Remember Data Delay days are NON ROTATION days for special classes.
  
Diane Rowland, will visit with our class on Thursday, October 13th.  She will be speaking with the children about Drugs and Alcohol in preparation for the annual Red Ribbon Week, which will be held the last week of October.  Take some time to ask your child what he/she learned and/or discussed at school that day!

Lunch for Life is a 3-day event, being held on Tuesday, October 11, Wednesday, October 12, and Thursday, October 13, to welcome the Kindergarten students to try a complimentary lunch.  Details were sent home earlier in your child’s folder.  (Any questions of concerns, please contact Kim Shatalsky @ 570-84-0466 Ext. 2124 or kshatalsky@northschuylkill.net)

 The School-wide Book Fair will take place in the Library starting Monday, October 17th. Parents will be able to shop with their child on Monday night (10/17) from 4-7 pm if interested.

October 3-7
We will be starting our 5th story for Reading, Smash! Crash!   Our focus will be on the story’s character.  We will be working with the consonant letter Mm and the beginning and final sound /m/ in words.  Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words, practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz.

For Math we will work with Topic 16; Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes.  Review the 2 and 3 dimensional shapes circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere.   

New October “AR” Book Buddy recording sheets are enclosed in your child’s bag.  Any student who reads 15 or more books will receive a monthly treat! Congratulations to all the students who met and/or exceeded their September goal! (Don’t forget library books can also be recorded on the recording sheets.)

We are currently collecting money for the classroom parties.  Please send in $5.00 in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom and mark “Party Money” on the outside of the envelope.  Thank you!!

The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 6th. Students will be permitted to wear gym clothes on Thursday no matter what their special is. 

October 3-7 will be Spirit Week at North Schuylkill!  More information is in your child’s folder !  On Friday, the high school band, cheerleaders, football players, and homecoming court will visit the elementary school for a pep rally!  If we’re lucky maybe Sparty will even come see us!

There is no school for students on Monday, October 10.

Wednesday, October 12th is the next Data Delay.  Please note that Data Delays are not a rotation day, however Weather Delays ARE a rotation day!  This is a change from the original plan at the beginning of the year.
