March 27-31
“Spring Pictures” Money-$ or returned photos are due back ASAP or by Monday, 3/27.

For Reading we will read the story Mayday! Mayday! A Coast Guard Rescue.  It is an informational text and we will be discussing cause and effect.  High frequency words, yellow, green, and blue will be the focus of this story.  Please practice all sight words daily!!  We will discuss what kinds of transportation help us in an emergency.  We will be working with the phonics sound /ks/ spelled with the letter Xx.

In Math, we will continue with Topic 9: Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10.  Students will decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 pairs in more than one way, will find the number for any number from 1-9 that makes 10 when added to the given number, and will classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.   Review daily work mats and continue to practice addition, subtraction, and different ways to make numbers from 4-10.

On Friday, March 31st, Ms. White’s 9th grade science students will be coming for a visit in the morning to read a story that was written by the students as part of their science class.  It will be exciting to hear the story they created!!

The March AR “Book Buddy” recording sheets are due on Friday, March 31st.  The goal for the month is 15+ books.

Friday, 3/31 is a dress down day for Autism Awareness.  Students can wear a BLUE shirt with sweatpants or jeans with a $1 donation.

Kindergarten Graduation Pictures will be taken on Thursday, April 20th.  (There will be NO make-up picture day.)  Envelopes will be sent home the week of April 3rd with portrait package information. All students will be photographed for the class photo and will need a WHITE COLLARED shirt to wear under a graduation gown.  Girls should not have ponytails high on their heads or wear big hair accessories since they will be wearing a graduation cap!    

Thank you to ALL who have already generously donated to our class’ Chinese Auction basket/bin for the PTO Spring Fling Auction coming up on April 8th - April 9th!  Our theme is "Let's Do Coffee”.  Donations are DUE by Friday, 3/31.

March 20-24

The “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participated, NEED to be returned to the teacher no later than Tuesday, March 21st.

Report cards for the 2nd trimester will be sent home on Monday, March 20th. Report cards are to stay home, but the ENVELOPE NEEDS TO BE SIGNED AND RETURNED as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, then please contact Mrs. Kaminsky.

The Tooth Fairy will visit Kindergarten and First Grade at NSE on Tuesday, March 21st to teach us how to take care of our teeth!  Be sure to ask your child about her visit!!

For Reading we will begin Unit 5: Going Places.  Our first story will be Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells.  It is an animal fantasy story and we will be discussing realism and fantasy.  Please practice all sight words daily!  Since we will be working with the letter Jj and its sound as in joke, students are asked to tell a kid’s JOKE this week.  Jokes can be written down or memorized and should be practiced at home before they are told to the class. Jokes can be shared Thursday or Friday---you choose the day!

For Math we will begin Topic 9; Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10.  Students will learn different ways to make 4 through 10 and write number sentences to show these different ways.   Review practice pages as they come home in the folder.  

Kindergarten registration for the 2017-2018, school year will continue this week Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this information to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office.

Kindergarten Graduation Photos will be taken on Thursday, April 20th. Order forms will be sent home the week of April 3rd.  Purchasing a package is optional however EVERY STUDENT will have his/her picture taken.  For anyone interested in purchasing a package, order forms and payment will be due by Wednesday, April 19th.  Every student needs to wear a white collared shirt.

March 6-10
            In Reading we will read the story, Abuela, by author Arthur Dorros.  It will be the last of our “adventure” stories for Unit 4.  It will be a fiction story about a city adventure and the boys and girls will learn a few Spanish words.  We will work with short and long /e/ sounds and the letter Ee and practice the comprehension skill, setting.   Please practice high frequency word cards.
            For Math, we will continue with Topic 8; Understanding Subtraction.  Students will act out and solve subtraction word problems, will use the minus sign to represent take away situations when recording subtraction, will use the equal sign, subtract, and write the difference.  Review practice pages as they come home in the folder. 
            Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be starting on Monday, March 6th and continue through Friday, March 10th.  Check for Mrs. Kaminsky's ad in the CLASSIFIED section of the newspaper.  Ads can be sent to school during the week for treats.  The I’m a Reader forms, for those who participate, should be returned t the teacher by the following Monday (March 13) with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.
            The monthly PTO meeting will be held on Monday, March 6th @ 6:30 in the NSE cafeteria.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.  The PTO Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser orders were due Friday, March 3rd.  Anyone who did not yet turn in orders must do so ASAP. 
            Our next monthly 2 Hour Data Delay day will be Wednesday, March 8th.  Please note there will be no special classes on Wednesday, 3/8.
            Spring Pictures will be taken at NSE on Thursday, March 9th.  ALL Children will be photographed and pictures will be available for purchase in 7-10 days.  PSP provides the school with a donation for every portrait package.  For best results do not wear green!!!  Students may dress up, but keep dress code in mind!!

            The PTO Spring Fling Chinese Auction will be held on April 8th and 9th.  Our class’ theme basket will be “Let's do COFFEE”. Donations are due to the teacher by Friday, March 31st.    If a family would rather not shop for a donation, monetary donations will be accepted and Mrs. Kaminsky will shop for items for the basket.  There is no value set and you can be creative!!  Thank you in advance for your support!!
