We will begin reading the story, Little Quack by Lauren Thompson.  It will be an animal fantasy story.  The comprehension skill we will target is plot, or the “what happens part of the story”.  We will be learning the consonant letter Rr and its sound /r/ as in rabbit and reindeer.

In Math we will continue to compare and order numbers 0-10 and will try to wrap up Topic 4 before the holiday break.  Review the daily practice pages with your child and practice the teen numbers (13-19).



Just a reminderthe Bowl For Kids Sake pledge envelopes were due back by Friday, December 11th. Students bowled during gym class on Monday 12/7.  THANK YOU for your participation and support!

Kindergarten will be having a “Polar Express” day on Wednesday, December 23rd.  Students are asked to wear their pajamas to school to dress like the characters in the book.  Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided for snack!  There will be an early dismissal at 1:00 so there will be NO BREAKFAST served.

December AR “Book Buddy” recording sheets will be due January 4th.  The goal for the month is 15 books.  Keep up the great work and Keep Reading!!

We will be reading the story Little Panda by Joanne Ryder.  This is an informational text, and we will be talking about “Animals Grow and Change”.  The comprehension skill we will target is compare and contrast and we will work with the letter sounds of /n/ and /b/.


In Math we will begin Topic 3:  Numbers 6-10.  Students should be practicing writing numbers from 0-10 correctly and continue counting by 1’s to 100.  Take some time at home to review the daily practice pages completed at school.

Students will need to be prepared for colder weather at recess.  Warm coats, gloves or mittens, hats and/or scarves are needed.  Recess is a half an hour and unless the ground is snow-covered or it is too cold we will try to get outside for “fresh-air”.

Kindergarten Physical Exams will be held on Thursday, December 10th.  (If you received a purple form, then please return ASAP.)

Brainshowmania sponsored by the PTO will be held on Friday, December 11th in the NSE gymnasium for students during the day (Kindergarten @ 1:10) and for a “Family Fun Night” @ 7PM.  All are welcome to attend the evening show!!!

”Bowl for Kids Sake” donation pledge envelopes are due back to school by Friday, December 10th.   Students are encouraged but not obligated to participate in this fundraising activity.  Students will bowl during their gym classes.     Thanks for your help!

Recording sheets for November’s Accelerated Reader program are due back to school on Tuesday, December 1st.  Any student who reaches the goal of 15 books will earn a punch on his/her ticket for the reward drawing later in the school year as well as receive a Pizza Hut Book It slip!  

In Reading the next story will be, Jack and the Beanstalk.  It is a Modern Fairy Tale.  For Phonics we will be reviewing letter Ii and its short and long sounds and learning the letter Bb and its sound as in boy and balloon.  We will be discussing more with realism and fantasy.  

In Math we will be working with Topic 3: Six to Ten.  Boys and girls will learn how to read, write, and count numbers from 6-10 and show numbers different ways.  Take some time to review the daily practice pages and try to practice these skills at home with your child.  Also continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s.  

Family and Friends are invited to attend the K-1 Christmas Concert which will be held at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, December 2nd in the North Schuylkill High School Auditorium for Kindergarten and 7:00 PM for 1st grade.   The doors will open at 5:30PM.  Students need to be dressed in dress code OR BETTER! Girls may wear Christmas dresses, skirts, etc. Boys can wear shirts, ties, Christmas sweaters, etc. NO JEANS OR GYM CLOTHES!

Letters to Santa are due on December 1.  If you haven't returned your child's letter, please do ASAP.

There will be no homework this week.

This week we will continue our Thanksgiving Theme and will celebrate our own Kindergarten Thanksgiving by watching Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving with our 4th grade, reading buddies.  

·     A letter to Santa was sent  home for you to complete with your child.  Please return this letter by Tuesday, December 1st.  A postman will be visiting sometime early in December to pick up the letters at school and take them directly to Santa at the North Pole!  We will address the letters in school.

Wednesday, November 25th will be an early dismissal @ 1:00pm and will be our last day of school before the holiday break.  There will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday, Friday, and Monday, November 26-30.  School reopens on Tuesday, December 1st.

Be thankful for these wonderful gifts that you have.  They are all unique in a special way.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with them.

This week we will read the story Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman in Reading.  We will be discussing hibernation and will learn to differentiate between real and make believe.

Daylight Savings Time ended on Sunday, November 1stAs the student handbook states, once the clocks change, students are NO longer able to wear shorts to school.  When the clocks move forward in spring then students can begin wearing shorts (weather permitting) to school again.

In Reading we will begin to read the story Nature Spy .  We will be looking at what we can learn about nature when we look closely.   We will focus on learning the comprehension skill setting and practice the learned high frequency words.


This week we will be learning the consonant letter Ss as in sun, snake, and Saturday.

Red Ribbon Week campaign is set for October 23-31, 2015.  The theme is “Respect Yourself, Be Drug Free!” – Check out the week’s scheduled events/information sheet in your child’s folder!  (Mon. 10/26—wear jeans; Tues. 10/27—wear crazy socks; Wed. 10/28—crazy hair day; Thurs. 10/29—wear sweats to school—no writing on sweatpants and try to wear PINK for cancer awareness month; Friday 10/30—wear Red and Blue and Jeans are permitted.

Friday, October 30th will be the school-wide Fall Festival and Halloween parade/party.   Students will meet Smokey Bear and participate in Fall Festival activities throughout the day.  The parade will begin at 1:30pm with the 6th grade students and end with Kindergarten.  Students will parade in front of the HOME side bleachers at the HS stadium, weather permitting.  ALL are welcome to come to see the children parade. 

Your child should NOT wear his/her costume to school!  Please send the costume to school in a bag with your child’s name on the outside.  Students will get dressed in costumes in the classroom after 1:00.  Keep in mind students will be dressing at school, so keep the costumes as simple as possible.  
October AR/BOOK BUDDY recording sheets are due on Friday, October 30th.  Please try to return all books by Friday so we can switch book boxes and begin November with a new selection of books!!  The goal for October is 16 or more books, and all students who meet or exceed the goal will earn a punch on their AR ticket as well as a monthly treat!!
Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 9th from 12:00-6:00. Please be sure to return conference forms as soon as possible, but NO LATER than Friday, October 30th.

We will begin Unit 2; Look at Us.  The first story is "Flowers". Please review recognizing capital and lowercase letters from Aa to Zz and the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, a, have and is.   We will be learning the vowel letter Aa as in apple and acorn.  We will focus on the short vowel sound.  Don’t forget to practice ALL sight word flashcards daily.

·    In Math we will be working with Topic 1:  One to Five.  Students will be counting sets of objects to 5, writing numbers 1-5, comparing sets, and representing numbers to 5.  Take some time to review daily worksheets.

The School-wide Book Fair will take place in the Library starting Monday, October 19th.  Parents will be able to shop with their child on Monday night (10/19) from 4-7 pm if interested.


We will begin the story Dig, Dig, Digging in Reading.  We will be talking about how machines help people. We will be practicing the sound /t/ for the letter Tt and the skill classifying and categorizing.

Crash!  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday.  Our focus will be on the story’s character.  We will be working with the consonant letter Mm and the beginning and final sound /m/ in words.  Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words, practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz. Your child should be able to read the little readers that come home on the new story! 

For Math we will work with Topic 16; Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes.  Review the 2 and 3 dimensional shapes circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere.  

October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week so please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family.  Be sure to have a practice fire drill and create an escape plan with a designated meeting place.

Please help your child practice/learn his/her 4-digit computer number. This will help him/her log into the computer quickly and give him/her more time to work when using computers at school.  (We can also stop wearing our name badges to lunch and library once all students know their ID number for the cooks and librarians!) I will be asking the children their 4 digit pin number on Friday.  Your child should know this by now.  This pin is used everyday.  If they know it, they will receive a treat.

Our Reading story this week will be "Plaidypus Lost".  We will be talking about how families cooperate, we will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home in your child’s folder. 


 With Fall and the cooler weather upon us, please be sure your child has the proper clothing for a ½ hour outside recess.  Kindergarten tries to get out for “fresh air” and time to run around whenever the weather allows.  Temperatures can vary from morning to afternoon and sometimes the shady areas of the playground are chilly.  Better to be prepared with a jacket/sweater/sweatshirt than be under dressed.  Also, please have your child practice zippering and/or buttoning his/her coat and “pulling” the sleeves right-side out before attempting to put it on.  Thank you!!!

In Reading, we read the book “The Little School Bus” and discussed characters. We also learned 6 amazing words: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth

Try to make sure your child has his/her bus tag every day. The end of the day is hectic and some children don’t know their bus numbers yet!
Friday, September 4  is a spirit day! This is completely optional! It is done to promote school spirit and enthusiasm for our sports teams. The children are allowed to wear any North Schuylkill t-shirt and uniform pants or uniform shorts (please see p. 5 of the student dress code.) The children may dress in regular uniform clothing if you wish.  
We will be walking to the stadium for a district wide pep rally. Please wear comfortable shoes.
School pictures will be taken on Thursday, September 10 th.  Envelopes will be sent home shortly.  School dress code must be followed.

We had a fabulous first day of Kindergarten and are thrilled to have your child in our class! We hope that he/she enjoyed their first day as much as we did!!

May 19-Kindergarten will practice for graduation on Tuesday, May 19th in the morning at the High School.  Please try to have your child at school for this practice so he/she will know what to do for the evening ceremony on Tuesday.  Students may be walking to the high school, so please dress your child in shoes for walking.
Kindergarten Graduation will be held in the High School Auditorium beginning at 6:00pm.   Students should arrive at the upper level and report to the cafeteria around 5:15.   The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 PM, so be sure not to be late and allow time for parking!  Tickets and more detailed information were sent sent home this week in your child’s folder.
Remember students will be wearing caps and gowns and will NEED to wear a WHITE-COLLARED shirt for the evening performance (NOT to school during the day).  Shoes will be visible so plan accordingly.  Girls should not wear hair accessories that will get in the way of the cap. 
 Due to construction at the high school, there is no air conditioning.  Please try to remember this when dressing your child since they will be wearing a cap and gown over their clothes.
 PLEASE NOTE:  Graduation caps and gowns must be returned to the teacher after the graduation ceremony.  Tassels are to be taken home as a keepsake.

In Reading we will start a new story titled, On The Move.   It is an informational text by author Donna Latham.  We will work with the letter sounds /v/ and /z/ and the comprehension skill, main idea. 

In Math we will continue Topic 12 Measurement. We will be comparing objects by length, height, capacity, and weight.  Please review daily practice pages!

The NS Diversity Club will be visiting our class on Monday, May 4th to conduct a short activity and talk with the boys and girls about diversity and accepting differences.  Take some time to discuss with your child what he/she learned!

The monthly newsletter will now be posted on the district website starting 4/30, under the Elementary tab-- Select “Principal’s Office”.  The newsletter will contain notable events for the month of May, as well as, a list of names for the April Citizens’ of the Month.  Congratulations to Braydon Ney for becoming April's Citizen of the Month.  Braydon is an outstanding student who has been following the school rules.  Braydon pays attention in class and volunteers to read and answer questions. Great job, Braydon!

For Reading we will begin the story "The Little Engine That Could" by Watty Piper.  It is a classic fantasy story, and we will be talking about how trains move.  We will be learning more about short /u/ sound and the comprehension skill, plot.

In Math, we will begin working with Topic 12 Measurement.  In Topic 12 we will be comparing objects by length, height, capacity, and weight.  Review the new math words; longer, shorter, as tall as, taller, and lighter.

“A Child’s View” insert for Kindergarten will be printed with the Thursday, April 30th edition of the Republican and Herald newspaper.  Our class’s entries and photo were included in this special edition.

NSE PTO will be having a Scholastic Book Fair from Monday, May 4th through Friday, May 9th.  Students will shop during their scheduled Library day.  There will also be a Parent Shopping Night on Monday, May 4th from 4-7 pm.

On Wednesday, our class will have an ice cream party.  Our class' lottery basket had the most tickets in it for kindergarten.  PTO will be providing the ice cream.

In reading, we will be reading "Trucks Roll".  It is a story about different types of transportation.  We will also discuss the letter/sound Uu as in umbrella, up, and umpire.

In Math, we will be working with Topic 12; Measurement.  We will be comparing objects by length, height, capacity, and weight.  Review the new math words; longer, shorter, as tall as, taller, and lighter.

Due to the PSSA testing, Monday will be book exchange and Friday will be music.  There are no special classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Kindergarten will have their physicals for those who need them.

This week we will be reading the story "Mayday! Mayday!  A Coast Guard Rescue".  We will discuss what kinds of transportation help us in an emergency.   We will be working with the phonics sound /ks/ spelled with the letter Xx.  We will review the comprehension skill Cause and Effect and the amazing words yellow, blue, and green.

In math, Topic 10 will take composing numbers further from 11-19.  Continue practice with addition and subtraction too!

Due to grades 3-6 taking the PSSA's, we will NOT have special classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  On Monday, we will still have computers and Friday, we will have art.

For Reading, we will read the story, Abuela by author Arthur Dorros.  This will be the last of our “adventure” stories for Unit 4.  It will be a fiction story about a city adventure and the boys and girls will learn a few Spanish words.  We will focus on the comprehension skill, setting.  We will review the sound of short /e/.
For Math, we will continue with Topic 9; Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10.  Students will learn different ways to make 4 through 10 and write number sentences to show these different ways.   Review practice pages as they come home in the folder.

The March AR/Book Buddy recording sheets are due on Wednesday, April 1st.  (The goal for the month is 16 books.)
Tuesday, March 31st is the last day of the marking period.  Report cards for the 3rd Marking Period will be sent home on Thursday, 4/2. You may KEEP the report card itself, but please sign and return the envelope.

Kindergarten Graduation Pictures will be taken on Wednesday, April 8th.  (There will be NO make-up picture day!)  Envelopes were sent home last week with portrait package information.  If interested in purchasing pictures then please return the money by Tuesday, April 7th .  (Cash OR checks made payable to Lifetouch.) All students will be photographed for the class photo and will need a WHITE COLLARED shirt to wear under a graduation gown.  Girls should NOT have ponytails high on their heads or wear big hair accessories since they will be wearing a graduation cap!
If you do NOT wish to purchase pictures, please send a note stating that, so the teacher knows your child just didn’t forget to bring the envelope/money.  Thank you!!

We will begin an informational text titled If You Could Go to Antarctica, by author Fay Robinson.  We will work with short and long /e/ sounds and the letter Ee and practice the comprehension skill, classify and categorize.  Please practice high frequency word cards.  We will be adding the new cards, here, go, and from this week.

For Math we will finish with Topic 8 - Understanding Subtraction and move on to Topic 9 – Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10.  Students will learn different ways to make 4 through 10 and write number sentences to show these different ways. Review practice pages as they come home in the folder.

 The PTO Spring Fling Chinese Auction will be held on April 11th and 12th.  Our class’ theme basket will be “Lucky Lotto”.    Donations are due to the teacher by Friday, 3/27 at the latest.    If a family would rather not shop for a donation, monetary donations will be accepted and Mrs. Kaminsky will buy for tickets for the basket.   Thank you in advance for your support!!

 In Reading we finish with the classic fairy tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Valeri Gorbachev. We will work on the Gg letter and sound.  Please practice high frequency word cards.
 For Math we will continue with Topic 8; Understanding Subtraction.  Students will act out and solve subtraction word problems, will use the minus sign to represent take away situations when recording subtraction, will use the equal sign, subtract, and write the difference.  Review practice pages as they come home in the folder.
 On Tuesday, March 17th we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day—Don’t forget to wear something GREEN.  It could be your lucky day!!!

Friday, March 20th is officially the First Day of Spring!!  We will try to get outside for recess as much as possible, so please check the weather forecasts and temperatures to be sure to dress your child appropriately for a ½ hour of recess.
